25 Outstanding Examples Of Black And White Photography
Black and white is a number of monochrome forms in visual arts. Most forms of visual technology start out in black and white, then slowly evolve into color as technology progresses. All photography was originally monochrome, most of these photographs were black and white. Even after color film was readily available, black and white photography continued to dominate for decades, due to its lower cost and its “classic” photographic look. [citation]

Um, this is not 25 “Outstanding” examples of “B&W photography.” Three (maybe four) are IR, a couple are shopped, and most of the rest are not “outstanding.” A couple of the photos are good to very good, but not outstanding. Don’t settle for mediocrity. Look up a few of the B&W masters and check out their work.

#8 is not … It looks like a screenshot from FABLE or FABLE 2
I am not sure if its photoshopped actually, it would be nice to actually know who took these and the processes they used. There is a very well known surreal photographer that uses double exposure and dark room techniques to achieve similar if not better views, though I would initial agree because I have not seen anyone recently that knows how to do dark room techniques.
But most of these are so so, I would agree that maybe 4 are great to outstanding, and I counted 4 more that were def. great, but the rest where just good, and would have been better in color.
I wonder how many of these were originally color that were just photoshopped or saved in BW?
Ummm… these are excellent examples of cheese. What I mean is they are all very cheesey, corny (insert regional vernacular here). Most if not all are Photoshoped #20 is an example of HDR (High Dynamic Range). None of this is seriously good stuff. Look up Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Alfred Stieglitz, Julia Margret Cameron, Robert Capa (to name a few) all of whom shot real black and white film, and photoshop didn’t exist for most.
also agree… Maybe 25 well-selling stock shots. None have any real dynamic range or richness of content. 23, 9, 19 in that order are the only ones not too stocky and they all lack tonal quality. (what Jack said plus Weston)
Many of these (with the exception of #20 which is clearly HDR) can easily be developed with traditional dark room photography technique.
B&W film photographers such as Jerry Uelsmann have been “chopping” for 40 years now.

I could make a better list with just the work of Salgado.
Ok, by definition anything made by digital means is not a photograph, its an image or print. yes there is a difference any photographer or photo student could tell you that. There is nothing wrong with shopping and chopping images, anything that can be done in photoshop can and has been done in a darkroom. Photographers have been manipulating images for years.

i doubly agree, some are notable, but all fall short. the blatant photoshopping and simply b.s. desaturation of otherwise vanilla photos dont add much.

Ya the gallery seems to be really nice but I am dissatisfied with some of the pics above.
Here’s what you got…….. 25 black and white pictures. Outstanding, maybe to somebody, a novice photographer, someone who knows little about the dynamics of black and white, somebody being cute. Oh a couple have merit, but when I read “25 Outstanding Examples Of Black And White Photography”, I expected at least, one Weston and one Adams in the stack. Hopefully, #1 isn’t the #1.

I also agree. Isn’t 9 a drawing? theres no way that whole image could be in focus. Number 8 is a ps special. The rest are lackluster touch ups. This article would have been better titled “how to make average photos more mysterious by throwing away colour information”, although a tutorial on how to use sepia might have been as entertaining.

Nowadays, it doesn’t really matter if the photo is photoshopped or not until it pleases the viewers mind. And I think these photos just pleases the viewers minds. If not anything else, then this is at least a good effort to collect eye catching images.
